So what is a hipster? Why dedicate a blog to it?
I realized I was a hipster one day in September of 2011. I was an intern for a major motion picture (What to Expect When You’re Expecting) and I was casting a scene with Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford and we were casting “hipsters” to fill the scene. It was a late night and we were ready to go home and the casting director suggested that we cast me as the last hipster male.
It was clear. I am completely a hipster. The beard, the beanie, the hoodie, the vintage camera…I am a hipster. It’s ok. I am living with it. I have embraced my inner hipster. We all should embrace our inner hipster. That is what this blog is for.
If you are vintage, wear beanies, listen to Sufjan Stevens, if you own a DSLR and consider yourself a “photographer”, if you watch Wes Anderson films at least once a week….you are hipster.
Embrace your inner hipster.
I have added a bunch of textures to my header on my main page. I was looking for some cool vintage wallpapers and ran across this website that provides vintage textures of all kinds. It’s called “Lost & Taken”. It’s incredible. If you ever want any cool vintage wallpapers or grungy textures than look no further than lostandtaken.com. Check it out!

Sacha Baron Cohen was excited about the Oscars until his tickets were threatened to be taken away…until he threatened them back with the video posted above.
If you don’t watch the Oscars, if you are hipster than you do, than at least try and watch for Sacha Baron Cohen. He will go as The Dictator…glorious beard and all.
Seeing as hipsters are some of the only people that still watch the Oscars and can name every best picture nominee with a smug grin…I decided to pick my favorites for winning.
Best Picture:
THE ARTIST
It’s gonna be The Artist. I haven’t seen it yet, but it looks good. It is a silent film in black and white…if that isn’t a formula to win the Oscar than I don’t know what is.
Second pick: Moneyball. Best writer nominee, best actor nominee, best supporting actor nominee…it could win, but The Artist is the clear fave.
Best Actor:
BRAD PITT
This is tough. It’s between Pitt and Clooney. I think Pitt gets the edge though. It was a very non-flashy reserved, honest, performance.
Second pick: George Clooney. One of his best performances ever. He could easily win, but Pitt has won more awards leading up to tonight so I give him the edge.
Best Actress:
VIOLA DAVIS
It’s a tough one here. Viola has more steam behind her but Meryl Streep is Meryl Streep and the Academy loves her even though her performance was sub-par. Viola deserves this one.
Second pick: Michelle Williams. She will win one at some point and could be the dark horse here as her portrayal as Marylin Monroe.
Supporting Actor:
NICK NOLTE
There isn’t a clear favorite here, but Nolte gave an amazing performance in Warrior and could definitely win.
Second choice: Jonah Hill. I mean how cool would it be if he won?
Supporting Actress:
OCTAVIA SPENCER
The Help could provide the best actress and best supporting actress. Octavia is the favorite to win and should win this one.
Second choice: Melissa McCarthy. Again, how cool would it be if she won?
Director:
MICHAEL HAZANAVICIUS
Who? Director of The Artist. Not a clear favorite here, but it’s either him or Woody Allen and I think Allen will win best screenplay so I think Mike takes director here.
Second choice: Woody Allen. His best film in years and the Academy loves Woody.
Writing Original:
WOODY ALLEN
Midnight in Paris was a breath of fresh air amid sequels and remakes. Should win by far.
Second choice: Michael Haza…you know.
Animated film:
RANGO
Seeing as there is no Pixar film here, Rango should win because it was very strange. The academy likes strange.
Second choice: A Cat in Paris. Never heard of it…sounds Oscar-ish.
Best song:
MAN OR MUPPET
Yes, tonight a member of Flight of the Conchords will win an Oscar. Bret McKenzie will win for Man or Muppet and I called this right after I finished watching The Muppets the day it was released in to theaters!
There you have it. My picks for the major categories of the Oscars. If you are still reading this than you are most likely a hipster. Thanks for reading.
There are a lot of hipster fads that make their way around and one of those are fake mustaches.
For some reason hipsters love fake mustaches in various forms. Whether it’s a mustache cup or the classic finger mustache, hipsters think it is somehow cool to make it look like they have a mustache. I really don’t know where this started or why, but it’s an easy way to get in to the hipster community or if you need to get a hipster a gift. I suggest the mustache mug. My sister-in-law made me a mustache mug and I love it.
So if you see someone with a mustache mug or drawing a mustache on their finger to place under their nose…they are hipster. Point at them and yell, “You hipster!”
You need to check out this video. It’s called The Hipster Orchestra by a music licensing group called Jingle Punks. They have done several videos and were pretty popular. But now they have done an Oscar medley and it’s great. Hit up Mashable for the original article. Here’s the video:

Most hipsters are huge fans of Steve Jobs and this hipster is no exception. Steve was creative, brilliant, had crazy facial hair, used to drop acid, loves Bob Dylan and generally raged against the machine. He was hipster before hipster existed.
So I wanted to share a very hipster video of Steve Jobs. It’s 32 years old. He has crazy facial hair and it really shows his younger side. He talks about a broad range of topics. He talks about how Apple started, how Apple got their name, the merging line of software and hardware and finally how important it was to Apple to make it easier for people to use computers.
It’s one of the most amazing videos of Steve. It was donated to the Computer History Museum by Regis McKenna. The video gets really bad at one point and makes me want to adjust the tracking. You youngins won’t know what that means but anyone born in the 80’s will get it.
Enjoy.

Hipsters love gaming. They aren’t your hardcore gamers and some might even say they don’t game…but they do. They love retro gaming and indie games. Indie games are making a bigger impact thanks to digital distribution channels like Steam or the AppStore. Promotions like the Humble Indie Bumble where people can pay whatever they want and get some great games, suggest that the community for indie games is strong.
Indie games all have a unique art style and have great music. Games like Limbo, Braid, and Sword and Scorcery are a joy to look at and hear. If you haven’t seen or played these games than I suggest you go check them out now. They are incredible and hipsters love them. Here is some footage of a few.
